I'm 17 and have proof that I'm 1/4 Native American. How would I go about finding what tribe I'm from?
I have heard from friends and family that DNA testing only will confirm what my birth information already has, which is I'm Native American, and won't specify which tribe I'm from. I checked my Grandma's birth information and it doesn't specify which tribe she was born in. Also, I've heard that if I wanted to join a tribe I would've had to have been registered at birth. Is this true or is it not to late?
The first thing I would do is try to gather as much info on your grandmother as possible. What are the names of her parents? Where were they born? Maybe your parents or an aunt of uncle can give your more info?
You could even try a google search with the names of your grandmother and great-grandparents. There is a lot of genealogical info and census data available on the web. Or try the website: www.familysearch.org/
The Mormons have been copying genealogical info for over a hundred years and apparently have info of more than a billion people nowadays. I live in the Netherlands, but they even had two of my great-grandparents on their website!
I have done a lot of genealogical research in the past and I would be happy to help you out further. Just send me an e-mail and I help you look on the web.
